  • Everyone Votes By Mail
    • What You Need To Know: To prevent the spread of COVID-19 and to protect the health and well-being of poll workers and voters, every active registered voter will automatically receive a ballot in the mail. Voting by mail is convenient and secure — by law, signatures on vote by mail return envelopes must be verified before the ballot may be counted.
    • What You Need To Do: Please vote by mail to protect your health; avoid crowds and long lines at polling places. We pay the postage! Ballots must be postmarked by Election Day and received in the Elections Department by November 20. Sign up now to track when your ballot was mailed, received, and counted at Where's My Ballot (BallotTrax).
    • If you prefer, you can hand-deliver your voted ballot to any ballot drop box between October 6 and 8 pm, November 3 (when polls close). See our list of drop box locations and schedules.

  • Are You Registered?
    • What You Need To Know: Vote by mail ballots will automatically be mailed to every active, registered voter.
    • What You Need To Do: First, check that you are registered at the Secretary of State's website.
    • If your residence address is not correct or you are not registered, fill out a new registration form at the Secretary of State's website
    • Don’t wait! Do this early to avoid delays getting your ballot in the mail. The deadline to register is October 19. After that date, registration options change. To learn more visit the Secretary of State's website.
  • Polling Places Have Changed!
    • What You Need To Know: Because every active, registered voter will automatically receive a ballot in the mail and to prevent the spread of COVID-19, there will be much fewer polling places. However, Election Day has been extended! Polling places will be open for four days: October 31 through November 3.
    • What You Need To Do: Please vote by mail to protect your health; help reduce crowds and long lines at polling places. We pay the postage! If you must vote in person, go early to avoid long lines and crowds. Find your polling place.
    • If it’s too late to return your ballot by mail, you may hand-deliver a voted ballot to any polling place before the polls close (Nov. 3, 8 p.m.). A list of all Marin County polling places has been posted, as well as a list of drop boxes.

  • Requesting a translated copy of the sample ballot
    • The sample ballot in some precincts has been translated into Spanish. The sample ballot in some precincts has been translated into Vietnamese. To request a copy, contact the Elections Department no later than seven days before the election:

      • Mail a written request to PO Box E, San Rafael, CA 94913. Must arrive seven days before Election Day

Election Observer Information

Due to the COVID outbreak required safety measures will be followed including social distancing and face masks. If you have any questions, call (415) 473-6456.

Anyone may observe all aspects of the election process so long as they do not interfere.

  • Appointment Calendar and General Information
  • Notice of Ballot Processing
    • Anyone may observe all aspects of the election process. Ballot processing is performed weekdays in the Elections Department at the locations listed below between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. except as noted.
    • Ballot processing may take place between the extended hours of 7:30 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. on weekdays and may take place during these same hours on some weekends as well. Notice of specific weekend dates on which ballot processing will occur will be posted at least 48 hours in advance of those dates. You may call the Elections Department at the number listed below for information about the daily processing schedule.
    • Due to the COVID outbreak required safety measures will be followed including social distancing and face masks. Appointments will be required. Check Observer Guidelines link below for more information.
    • Ballot processing includes:
      • Sorting returned vote-by-mail ballots
      • Verifying signatures on ballot envelopes
      • Removing ballots from envelopes
      • Duplicating damaged ballots
      • Counting vote-by-mail ballots
      • Counting precinct ballots on Election Day after polls close at 8 p.m.
      • Processing provisional ballots during the canvass period
      • Conducting a manual tally of ballots at the end of the canvass period

  • Preparing Vote-By-Mail Ballots
    • Preparing vote-by-mail ballots for counting can start 29 days before the election, in the Elections Department office during regular business hours, weekdays 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Work will continue through mid-November until all ballots are processed.
  • Counting Vote-By-Mail Ballots
    • Counting vote-by-mail ballots can start 29 days before the election, in the Elections Department office secure room during regular business hours, weekdays 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Counting will continue until all ballots are counted.
  • Polling Places
    • Early voting polling places are open October 31 - November 2 for a minimum of 8 hours, opening times vary by location. Election Day polling places are open from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
    • A list of polling places and hours of operation is available on our website.
  • Ballot Drop Boxes
    • Ballot Drop Boxes will be available throughout the county 28 days before the election. A list of locations is available on our website.
  • Precinct Ballots
    • Precinct ballots will be returned to the Civic Center at the middle arch October 31 - November 2 after the polls close each day. Ballots will be returned after 8 p.m. on Election Day.
  • Manual Tally
    • The manual tally of ballots is conducted at the end of the canvass period in the Elections Department office during regular business hours, weekdays 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Work will continue until the manual tally is finished. Notice of the specific date will be posted online five days in advance.
