Aramburu Island

A 17-acre man-made atoll transformed into sustainable bird habitat.

Background

Aramburu Island was created in the early 1960s by dumped dredge spoils and fill from nearby development. After years of work, Richardson Bay Audubon and its partners, including Marin County Parks, successfully improved aquatic, wetland, and upland habitats here for a range of local species, stabilized the rapidly eroding eastern shoreline, and helped the island and surrounding communities become more resilient to sea level rise. There are no amenities and Aramburu Island is only accessible by boat
