San Rafael, CA – The Marin County Elections Department posted its first results of the November 3 election at 8:02 p.m. on election night, November 3,and the vote counting ended at 10:40 p.m. with more than 37,000 ballots counted. There are a little more than 9,000 ballots left to tally.
The Elections staff plans to deliver updated numbers on its election results webpage. Registrar of Voters Lynda Roberts has started the canvass and plans to certify the election before Thanksgiving. The official canvass is the public process of preparing and tallying all ballots received in an election, including vote-by-mail ballots and provisional ballots not included in the election night count. The canvass also includes the process of reconciling ballots and performing the manual tally of 1 percent of all the precincts.
“Even though we aren’t required to begin the canvass until Thursday following the election, the team started working non-stop the day after the election,” Roberts said. “We are all very committed to reporting results as quickly as possible so both candidates and the public don’t have to wait too long.”
After the remaining vote-by-mail ballots are verified, tallying will begin November 9 and an updated results report will be posted on the Elections Department website by 5 p.m. Tuesday, November 10. The registrar is required to conduct the canvass daily except for Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays. The canvass will resume on Thursday after the Veterans Day holiday on November 11.
The canvassing process is conducted weekdays 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and is open to the public. For more information call the Elections Department at 415-473-6456.
